Only thing why portugal is more developed then Serbia is because they was imperialists like Spain,UK and France and had colonies(torturing people in colonies to work and discrimination of that people)

You should not base your views of imperialism and the colonial empires like Spain, UK and France and Netherlands to "standardize"all other colonial empires, there's also a theory, if you were intelligent enough and had brains that defends the Portuguese were more humane, towards other races, we did not anihilate nor terrorize tribes and the natives like the others did, we chose the "Phoenician" colonialism, which was set up trade stations in lands that werent inhabited and trade with the locals (sure we enslaved the most, but at least we didn't kill them like the spaniards and french)

- Portuguese re-discovered Terra Nova and discovered Canada, and the country's name itself comes from a portuguese denomination of "Cá nada", which translated means (here lies nothing). We didnt settle it because of the rough weather.
-Portuguese were the first to enter the prohibited city of Beijing, the first to reach India by sea, the first europeans to trade with India;
-Portuguese discovered Ascensão Island, Tristan da Cunha, Madagascar, Mauritius, Reunion, Socotra (europeans didnt know its location).
-Portuguese were the first europeans to land in Japan
-Portuguese were also the first europeans to drink tea
-Portuguese were the ones to introduce firearms in Japan and Asia
-Portuguese were the only partners of trade of the Kingdoms of Siam and Japan, and we even were the solo trade partners with Japan for 200 years.
-We were the ones who introduced tea in England as their tradition, brought by Queen Catarina to the english royal family.
-We invented tons of maritime acessories, and the galleys, etc...
-Portuguese (it has been proved) we discovered Australia (Darwin area), Taiwan, etc...



So as you know, my country had its glory, and we, as individuals part of a country should all be proud of our countries, sure my country enslaved, killed, and contributed to the shithole that Brazil is today because of the silly miscigenation between Africans and brazilian natives, but our version of colonialism was the less harmful and the most friendly, and I'm not ashamed of what my country did, never will, never have.

But cultural and religious situation changed drastically and so did scientific contribution with them. Another example are Jews.
