For instance if a guy who was about to be hot stuff is now only playing AtWar and has no career. It's negative, right?
And if a guy playing AtWar has learned a lot from this game thus leading to success in over all life. Now he uses some sun tzu like strategy in Marketing and stuff, now he making millions. That's a very positive impact, right?

AW helped me up to a certain degree with geography, a bit of English and maybe with fast decision taking. I've also made good friends (most of which are lost in the past) and have had nice laughs. However it taught me about the variety of stupidity this world holds, it showed me how addicting as well as time wasting writting in the forums was and this community was one my main arguments as to how the world can't be changed. This last one could potentially change a bit with this new admin, however it's up to the test.

I've basically wasted so much time here with the main purpose being having fun, helping and meeting people that I didn't notice how it made me learn about sociology I guess. Is this postive for my life? Well, why not, every teaching is a success to me, even if it's not the most positive thing in the world. Deep inside me, there's this chaotic and apparently conflicting opinion: I regret having wasted so much time here but I'd be sadder if I hadn't and I'd probably do it again if I had the time to invest now...

^^ This is a very thoughtful and honest answer. It gives me encouragement to see things like this. Thank you

How has atWar affected me? It's been a big frustration, to be honest. Even though it's not my full-time commitment right now, people don't realize how much time I've already put in over the last 4-5 months. The game was in such a bad state when I arrived... I've put a lot of time into fixing things, adding new strategies and updates so people would at least see *something* is happening while I work on the bigger, behind-the-scenes problems, and many other things. I know some people appreciate it, but other people I've had to deal with are just so rude and immature for no reason, it makes me question why I even bother sometimes.

Some people seem to want to just pick fights with me... I mean literally people who I don't even know randomly decide to piss on me when I haven't even done anything to them. And then they get shocked when I tell em to fuck off... like it's okay for them to dish it out, but they can't take it when I dish it back. Maybe it's just because I'm in a position of authority right now as an admin, so I'm the guy people love to hate? I don't know, but it's really very strange to me, because normally I aim to be kind and generous with people until they give me reason otherwise. Why people choose to be confrontational with me, I'll never know.

All of this has made me question my faith in humanity... I don't know if it's a generational thing because I'm in my 30's and dealing with young people who are just extra selfish and entitled? Or if our society as a whole has gone down so far it's beyond redemption? If I have any tiny bit of hope left, it's only because I've made friends with a few really good people here in the community. The game itself is addicting somehow, and I do enjoy it. So many times when I come online to check something or fix something, I end up talking with the people I like and I guess you could say "wasting" a couple of hours. But I do enjoy that time.

I know that atWar was neglected for many years and it was basically this neglect that allowed the community to become so unusually toxic (and by toxic I mean negative... I'm okay with politically incorrect and even risqué, but it's the rude and immature stuff that needs to go). Basically I've inherited a poisoned well, and I'm taking on the difficult task of trying to un-poison it. In many ways it would have been easier to shut down for a few months and then relaunch with a clean slate, but instead I'm clinging to the belief that as we continue driving out the worst offenders from this community, things will eventually heal. Even if that means I end up losing money in the short term, it's worth it to me if that's what it takes to create the kind of community we all (or almost all of us) want.

I relate to this so much. It's a very tiresome job being an administrator of any community, especially online communities that involve children/teenagers. You need to remember that many people use games like atWar to escape reality, so you tend to meet a lot of nasty, sick, twisted people. Unfortunately, you can't really do anything but to ignore them and continue working. It sucks, but it is what it is.

When i first started playing, i just wanted to find a strategy game that was a bit more strategic than 'RISK' but not so involved that a game took days or weeks to play (like Civ or CK/Europa Universalis) - something to take my mind off the bullshit things in the real world - and AW was the perfect fit for that.

However, after years of playing, the real impact has been on the social aspects, and at the risk of over-generalizing, the impact has been the realization that people are a lot more similar than they are different. I originally thought that there would be radical differences in cultures and values from different regions in the world, but for the most part, people are looking for the same things... respect, a good time, maybe a girl (or boy) friend that treats them well. And they fall into the same negative traps also... ego boosts, self-centredness, retaliation for perceived wrong, trying to be sneaky/underhanded to achieve some agenda. Oh and attention seeking (kinda of a specific type of ego boost imo).

Once you get to know someone a bit, you tend to see why they fall into the negative traps... understanding this has been the real impact of AW.

Play on !

Np, it's been one of my many trained skills during my +5k posts in this god damned forum

1. AW is pure frustation, in every single sense you can find. That's why my irl skill of giving no shits about the negatives and simply enjoy and have fun with the positives has been tremendously helpful to me. Simply be yourself while taking care and paying atention to the poeple you would in real life.

2. People seek atention, we're in an internet society where we can't see each other so the best way to be noticed is by calling people's atention, even if their only skill to do such is by insulting XD I've made some acquaintances by simply being funny back at them after they tried to insult me but everyone's got their own personality to answer back!

3. Absolutely no faith in humanity left, specially after seeing what lies under this game however, some people here have been a true blessing (hi brian, hope you're reading )

4. Former admins lost faith in humanity as well, therefor in AW as well. Hope you can hold on to your faith in this game, if not in humanity, at least. It's been kinda impactful in our lifes at one point in time for most of the long lasting players. I've personally put a lot of effort in teaching, making it fun for people, translating into spanish and specially in having a holding on my patience
